Many people head for their articles or book chapters with a quote, giving seriousness, authority and authenticity to what follows. Usually a good sentence although the same quotations and anecdotes repeatedly (Edison and his light bulbs, Colonel Sanders and his chickens) begins to the grid after a while.
With this in mind, here's a quote that changed my life, "The Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi (translated by Thomas Cleary). Have a read and I will explain why.
"FIVE TYPES OF GUARD"
"The five types guard is the top position, middle position, the lower position, right hand guard and left hand guard. Although the guard may be divided into five classes all have the purpose of killing people. No other type of guard as well as five years.
Whatever guard to take, not to think of it as being on guard, think of it as part of the act of killing. "
I found the book of Five Rings to the tune of fifty pence in Oxfam. At that time I was manager of operations of a media company. I walked 12 executives and 160 employees in three shifts day and night on a business running 24 / 7 and only closes for Christmas. Bringing all move in the same direction was often a challenge, as were a group energetic, with sizable egos. There were many heated conversations and passionate arguments. I admit that sometimes I like to go from a meeting and feel as if I had taken a right good kicking.
When under attack, people look for our soft and vulnerable points, which point to our emotions and our pride. This can knock us off balance and make us feel pain and rage. If you hurt our pride, which can counter the attack irrational and inefficient, and this will make us look even weaker.
Instead of having an attack against the weak, was better at guard and admit that you can not have all the answers, need more time, even acknowledge the errors and oversights and excuses. Do not show anger, but strive for inner calm, put your ego on hold and demonstrate unwavering equanimity.
Be patient, have the prospect, and have perseverance. Not all conflicts are won in a few easy movements. Do not think this is as in guard; think of it as part of the act of killing. You persevere. You will win.
The big battles are those fought in inside ourselves, we often have to be on guard. In this case, I do not think of it as being on guard, think of it as part of the act of living.
